The locking mechanism actually is an intensifier that multiples the force pulling the tool up into the spindle and prevents the tool from coming out during duing heavy cutting. Without it, during heavy cuting the downward force from the helix of the endmill can overcome the bellevue springs that pull the tool into the spindle.
