Description

Compatible with ALL Baldor Spindle Motor Configurations.

Having been involved with the Fadal Spindle Drives since the very first machine at Fadal, we can say that this is the best Spindle Drive ever to go into a Fadal machine!
Gentek started manufacturing these in 2013 and it is by far the favorite among servicemen. It goes in easily and just works!

The Fadal Spindle Drive interface used the same standard Molex connections from the very beginning. This eliminated custom wiring changes when installing a different manufactures Drive.
You simply unplug the Molex connectors of the old and and use the same Molex connections for the replacement Drive.
This Drive uses the same interface connections as your old Drive.
1) Six Pin Molex for Drive control signals
2) Nine Pin Molex for the Encoder signals from the motor
3) Six Pin Molex for the WYE/DELTA motor selection
4) Encoder Out Terminal for the Rigid Tap signals to the 1010 RT Spindle card

The Glentek Drive replaces all these Fadal Inverters and Vector Drives for standard machines using the Fadal CNC along with the Baldor Spindle Motor:
 - AMC
 - BALDOR
 - SEWO
 - Mitsubishi
 - Toshiba
 - Yaskawa

Our Glentek Drive covers all the Standard Fadal Machine Configurations:
 WYE/DELTA 7500 RPM motor
Closed Loop Vector or Inverter (VDF)
Rigid Tap or Non Rigid Tap
 Single or 3 Phase Power
 7500 to 15000 RPM
10 to 20 HP Baldor Motor
 240 VAC Input Voltage
 40 Taper Spindle

NOTE: This drive does not support the VMC 20, TRM machines or 50 Taper spindle motors.

This is a drop in replacement for all standard Fadal Spindle Drives.
It's very easy to select your required mode and setup!

Only needs simple two adjustments:
One to tune the motor RPM
One to adjust the RPM going M3 or M4 so they are the same.

The Fadal machine was configured with three basic Spindle designs:
 1) Inverter Drive, no encoder, no Rigid Tap.
 2) Vector Drive using the spindle motor encoder to provide more torque, without the Rigid Tap option.
 3) Vector Drive with the Rigid Tap option.
This drive will do all the above configurations.

About The Mode Of Operation
Rigid Tap, Closed Loop Vector (Sensored using the spindle motor encoder)

The Glentek spindle drive uses flux vector technology to close a torque (current) feedback loop. When applied to a three phase induction motor, the result is servo motor like performance from a standard three phase induction motor. The Digital Signal Processor (DSP) based spindle drive uses its high speed math processing capability to continuously calculate flux and torque vectors and to maintain a constant 90 degree phase difference between the vectors. This technique allows torque control from zero speed to base speed and above. Encoder feedback provides the shaft position data needed to calculate the vectors and velocity data, thus, Vector Control allows precise speed control down to and including zero speed of an induction motor.

Inverter Mode (VFD)
The Spindle Drive can operate in sensor-less mode (no encoder feedback is needed). This mode of operation is usually referred to as inverter mode or VFD (Variable Frequency Drive) mode. With advanced mathematic algorithms and latest DSP technology, the Glentek drive is optimized to produce a steady starting torque from standstill right up to full speed with high efficiency. The applied frequency and voltage are increased at a controlled rate and ramped up to accelerate the load without drawing excessive current.

The Drive has simple switch selector to set the desired configuration setting.
Simply select your motor horsepower, spindle speed and feedback configuration.
Note: For 15k spindle RPM, just select 10k (5000 motor RPM, 3 to 1 ratio).
There are only two adjustments:
 1) For RPM tuning.
 2) Balance for equalizing forward/reverse rpm.

Below outlines the 8 simple simple steps involved in the R & R process.
1. Removing the old drive
Turn off the power to the VMC and wait 5 minutes before beginning removal.

Take pictures of the connectors and wires before removing the old Spindle Drive.

Disconnect all the wires and cables.
If any wires are not labeled take note of their location.
Of the cables, only the Control cable and the Delta/Wye cable can be confused, both are 6 terminal connectors.

The control cable has 6 sockets in the connector and Delta/Wye cable has 3 sockets in the connector.
Unbolt the old drive and remove the old drive and any adapter plate. The new GTK drive is designed to attach directly to the stud bolts of the back wall.
Other drives have a fuse adapter outside of the drive. This fuse is not required

2. Mechanical Installation
Install the new drive (slots down) by first resting the drive on the lower mounting studs in the panel and positioning the drive over the studs at the top.
Hold the drive against the panel and loosely install four screws, top two first. Then tighten all four screws.

3. Electrical Installation
Power Terminal Block Connections
Begin the wiring by connecting the AC, regenerative braking, motor, and green ground wires.
Match the wire labels to the terminal block labels.
Check connections for tightness.
See PDF instructions for more details.

4. Load Meter Cable
Connect the load meter cable by connecting the black wire to P1-1 screw terminal and the red wire to P1-2.

5. Spindle Control Cable
Connect the spindle control cable to P2.
The spindle control cable has 6 sockets installed; do not mistake the wye/delta connector with only 3 sockets.

6. Wye/Delta Cable
Connect the wye/delta cable to P4 (wye/delta is an option for 7500 RPM spindles; your VMC may not have this cable).

7. Encoder Feedback Cable Connect the encoder feedback from the motor (9 terminal connector) to P3 (VFD drives doe not need this cable).

8. Rigid Tap Cable (Encoder Output To CNC Control)
For VMC’s with the Rigid Tap option, connect the rigid tap cable from the CNC to P5 of the spindle drive.
Use the installation drawing (Drawings & Diagrams) to match the wires by color to the correct terminal

    Glentek Spindle drive

I installed this spindle drive into my 1999 VMC 15 in under 2 hours. The instructions are thorough, and the technical support I got from Dave over the phone to diagnose my machine was superb! Thanks!

    Glentek Spindle Drive

I just installed my new Glentek spindle drive on my Fadal VMC4020. The nice folks at NXGEN CNC Parts were very accommodating. I let them know that I was in a rush and wanted the drive to arrive ASAP. They went a couple of extra miles for me to make that happen. The drive came well-packed, and with excellent instructions for installation. I was slightly skeptical of their 'plug and play' claim, but they weren't kidding. It literally was that quick. And setup -- there *was* no setup. I set the selector switch to the position that matched my configuration: 15hp and rigid tapping. I turned on the mill, started the spindle and it's just worked ever since. As I write this, I am beside the mill on the spindle drive's second full day of operation. It's making parts at 10k rpm, just as I hoped it would. At startup, while I tested it, I noticed four things: - the spindle is a bit smoother and nicer at startup, acceleration, deceleration, stopping and orienting. That's what a couple of decades of advances in VFD technology buys you. - I did notice an 8Hz variation in output frequency between M3 Forward and M4 reverse, so I easily tuned that out using the Balance pot, because I want it to track as perfectly as possible in rigid tapping. - Rigid taping seems a bit smoother and crisper than with the old Baldor SWEO drive. I have not tested with the thread sample and dial gauge yet; I just ran an existing program in the air. - The spindle load meter is more rational than before. On the old Baldor drive, it read half-way up at some rpms while lightly loaded. That was probably about the motor's performance near and far from its Base Speed. Now the display reads how much work the spindle is really doing. Overall rating: 100% satisfied. Definitely would buy again.
